Horror Country pushes country storytelling into monsters, devils, graveyards, murder scenes, carnival grotesquerie, and southern-fried occult imagery. The sound can be acoustic and primitive or punky and noisy, but the lyrics openly court the macabre.

History

Although old country had always contained dark and supernatural material, Horror Country became more self-aware through underground roots scenes, Halloween-themed releases, and psychobilly/country crossover communities. Those Poor Bastards, Harley Poe, The Goddamn Gallows, and adjacent acts gave the lane a cult identity.
