Hip-Hop Breaks are the funk, soul, rock, and Latin drum-break records that DJs looped for dancers and producers sampled into rap and electronic music. This is less a modern genre than a source-language: "Amen Brother," "Apache," "Funky Drummer," "Impeach the President," and similar records became shared rhythmic DNA. In the breakbeat tree, the tag marks the hip-hop root system behind DJ breaks, big beat, jungle, breaks, trip-hop, and sample-based electronic production.
History
DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and other early hip-hop DJs isolated the drum breaks that made dancers move. The Ultimate Breaks & Beats series, issued from 1986 to 1991, helped canonize those records for DJs and producers, turning older funk and soul sides into a practical production library. As samplers became central to rap, the same breaks traveled into golden-age hip-hop, dance music, jungle, big beat, and countless later electronic tracks.
