The wide-screen, full-throttle end of road music: big choruses, surging tempos, and engine-revving momentum tuned for interstate cruising. Layered guitars, anthemic piano, and a chest-out chorus. Less introspective than road rock, more about the rush of motion itself, the songs feel like passing lanes and neon truck-stop signs.

History

Grew out of mid-'70s heartland rock's romance with cars and distance, sharpened into FM radio staples through the early 1980s. Acts framed the highway as both literal and metaphorical liberation. The strain dovetailed with classic-rock radio formatting and stayed alive through later touring acts who kept driving-anthem set-closers central.
