Hi-NRG is the fast, synthetic, high-energy disco offshoot built from pounding four-on-the-floor drums, octave basslines, bright synths, dramatic vocals, and ecstatic release. It grew from disco but pushed tempo, electronics, and intensity toward the sound of 1980s gay clubs, Eurodisco, and later dance-pop. Compared with classic disco, Hi-NRG is harder and more mechanical; compared with house, it often retains theatrical pop vocals and a maximal chorus-driven sense of lift.
History
Sylvester and Patrick Cowley helped define the path from disco to Hi-NRG, with Cowley's productions and remixes making electronic club records feel faster and more futuristic. Bobby Orlando, Divine, Miquel Brown, The Flirts, Evelyn Thomas, and Dead or Alive pushed the style into 1980s club and pop visibility. Hi-NRG became a crucial bridge into Italo disco, Eurobeat, Eurodance, and queer dance-pop culture, keeping disco's liberatory spirit alive after the word "disco" became commercially risky.
