History
The 'I want' song is a musical-theatre convention codified on Broadway and imported wholesale into Disney animation by Howard Ashman, who framed 'Part of Your World' (1989) and 'Belle' (1991) as textbook yearning numbers. It became the structural spine of the Disney film musical, from 'Out There' (Hunchback, 1996) and 'Go the Distance' (Hercules, 1997) to 'Almost There' (2009), 'When Will My Life Begin' (Tangled, 2010) and Encanto's 'Waiting on a Miracle' (2021). Sung by Jodi Benson, Paige O'Hara, Roger Bart and Auli'i Cravalho among others, the hero's 'I want' song remains the genre's most reliable narrative and emotional engine.
