History
Bruce Springsteen's 'The River' (1980) and stark acoustic 'Nebraska' (1982) defined the form, turning unemployed men and small crimes into rock narrative; John Mellencamp's 'Jack & Diane' and 'Rain on the Scarecrow' and Bob Seger's vignettes localized it to the Midwest heartland during the Reagan-era industrial decline.
