Heartland rock uses straightforward rock rhythm, sometimes country-rock twang, and lyrics focused on work, town life, family strains, and communal aspiration. The vocals tend to be gritty or plainspoken, aiming for earned feeling rather than glamor.

History

Emerging in the Midwest and Rust Belt, heartland rock drew from country rock, roots rock, garage rock, and R&B to create a populist rock language. Though not strictly country, it significantly shaped country-adjacent songwriting through figures like Springsteen, Mellencamp, Seger, Petty, Steve Earle, and later heartland-minded country writers.
