History
Heartbreak became a public blues language in classic female blues, country blues, piano blues and later electric blues. Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, B.B. King, Otis Rush, Etta James, Percy Mayfield and Bobby "Blue" Bland all made pain feel dignified and musically shaped. Soul and R&B expanded the arrangements, but the core blues device stayed the same: repeat the hurt until it becomes form.
