Harlem Swing

Harlem swing feels hotter, more local, and more dance-battle tested: heavy Savoy pulse, bold showmanship, tight riffs, strong drumming, and a direct line to Black social dance culture.

History

The style centered on Harlem venues like the Savoy Ballroom and Cotton Club, where Chick Webb, Ellington, Cab Calloway, and other leaders worked inside one of jazz’s most competitive ecosystems. It helped define the choreography, glamour, and rhythmic attack of the swing era.
