Post-grunge tilted toward muscular hard rock: heavier drop-tuned riffs, thicker low end and more aggressive, gravel-throated vocals than the radio-ballad strain. Choruses still soar but the verses hit harder, with bluesy swagger and arena heft. Less introspective angst, more fist-pumping, big-amp force aimed at active-rock audiences.
History
Took shape around 1997-2000 as Godsmack, Sevendust and Shinedown fused grunge's gloom with metal-edged hard rock crunch. Shinedown's Leave a Whisper (2003) and Godsmack's chart-topping albums anchored 2000s active rock. Alter Bridge, formed from Creed members, pushed the sound toward virtuosic, heavier territory through the decade.
