Hard Dance is an umbrella for tough, high-energy club music that sits between hard house, hard trance, hardstyle, hardcore, and rave. It is faster and more forceful than mainstream house or trance, but not always as extreme as gabber or speedcore. The sound favors big riffs, pounding kicks, hoovers, breakdowns, and a straightforward sense of drive.

History

Hard dance grew from UK hard house, European hard trance, Belgian/Dutch rave, early hardstyle, and late-1990s superclub culture. Tony De Vit, Lisa Lashes, BK, Tidy Boys, Anne Savage, Lab 4, Yoji Biomehanika, Scot Project, Organ Donors, The Prophet, DJ Isaac, and Showtek all helped shape the broader hard-dance ecosystem. The term remains useful because scenes often overlap across hard house, hardstyle, and harder trance events.
