Hard bop keeps bop’s complexity but adds stronger blues, gospel, and R&B weight, especially in tenor sax, piano, and groove.
History
It formed partly as a reaction to cool jazz, with East Coast musicians wanting a more Afro-centric, blues-based sound. Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, Cannonball Adderley, and Lee Morgan made it the dominant small-group style of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and it still defines much straight-ahead jazz today.
