Happy Hardcore is fast rave music with bright piano riffs, chipmunk or diva vocals, sentimental hooks, breakbeat or four-beat drums, and sugary emotional release. It keeps hardcore's speed but replaces darkness with joy, melody, and singalong euphoria. The sound can be silly, heartfelt, or ecstatic, often closer to cartoon pop than industrial aggression.

History

Happy hardcore grew from UK breakbeat hardcore, Dutch gabber-pop crossover, rave piano, and 1990s commercial hardcore. DJ Paul Elstak, Dune, Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo, Hixxy, Sharkey, Force & Styles, Scott Brown, Brisk, Ham, Dougal, Gammer, Darren Styles, and Scooter defined major branches. In the 2000s, Clubland X-Treme Hardcore and UK hardcore reframed happy hardcore for a new generation.
