Gypsy Punk fuses punk energy with Balkan, Romani, klezmer and immigrant-party instrumentation: accordion, violin, brass, galloping rhythms, multilingual vocals, theatrical frontmen and choruses designed for jumping crowds. The term is imperfect and sometimes contested, but it points to a real 2000s scene where diasporic folk sounds met punk spectacle, global-club energy and anti-border identity.
History
Gogol Bordello made the style internationally visible from New York, mixing Ukrainian immigrant experience, punk rock and Eastern European folk gestures. Kultur Shock, DeVotchKa, Balkan Beat Box and Firewater explored related Balkan-rock and global-punk territory, while festival culture spread the sound. The style overlaps with cabaret punk, klezmer-punk and Balkan brass because all use traditional instruments as engines for loud, theatrical, hybrid shows.
