Gulf and Western is Jimmy Buffett's coined coastal-country idiom: easygoing acoustic strum, island perk, soft-rock warmth, sly humor, and Gulf Coast imagery. It avoids hard honky-tonk edges in favor of relaxed groove, saltwater escapism, and songs that sound sunburned but articulate.
History
Buffett developed the lane by mixing singer-songwriter craft with country melody, beach-bum mythology, and coastal Southern identity. Later country artists—especially Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Alan Jackson, and Mac McAnally—translated the style into mainstream country, but Buffett remains the axis around which the whole subgenre spins.
