The punk-soaked edge of grunge: fast, snotty, garage-fuzz blasts with short songs, raw screamed vocals and a snarling DIY attitude. Heavily indebted to the Stooges, Black Flag and the Sonics, with feedback-drenched guitars and tongue-in-cheek nihilism. Filthier and more frantic than the brooding, metal-leaning grunge mainstream.

History

The rawest Sub Pop strain, led by Mudhoney's 1988 single 'Touch Me I'm Sick,' fused hardcore speed with garage-rock filth. Mark Arm and Steve Turner, both ex-Green River, set the template; Tad, L7 and Denver's The Fluid pushed it heavier, weirder and snottier. It stayed close to the underground as polished grunge took over radio in the early 1990s.
