The heaviest grunge crossover, leaning into metal's weight: thick downtuned riffs, sludgy churning grooves, and brooding, harmonized or growled vocals. Doomy minor-key dread and bludgeoning dynamics sit closer to Sabbath and alternative metal than to punk. Darker, denser and slower-burning than radio grunge, with menace front and center.
History
Crystallized as Alice in Chains fused grunge gloom with metal heaviness on Dirt (1992), while Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger (1991) pushed riff-driven heft. Drop-D acts like Helmet and Corrosion of Conformity sharpened the sludge, and late-90s bands such as Godsmack extended the formula. The style bridged grunge to the heavier nu-metal and alternative-metal scenes that followed.
