The heaviest, most riff-driven wing of grunge: sludgy downtuned guitars, Sabbath-indebted riffs, pummeling drums, and howling, anguished vocals. Less punk-jangle than the Seattle norm, more thick low-end crunch and dynamic detonation. Grunge played as muscular hard rock — distortion-soaked, primal, and built around the riff.
History
The riff-forward end of the early-90s Seattle explosion, where Soundgarden and Alice in Chains drew on Sabbath and 70s hard rock more than punk. As grunge broke nationally in 1991-92, these heavier acts brought genuine hard-rock weight to the movement, bridging metal heritage with alt-rock attitude before the scene fragmented mid-decade.
