Seattle's sludgy collision of punk and heavy metal: downtuned, fuzz-soaked riffs, quiet-loud song shapes, anguished raw vocals and flannel-clad anti-rockstar grit. Drums hit hard and dry, solos are short and ragged, production deliberately murky — heaviness with no glam polish and a vein of damaged, ironic despair.

History

Brewed on Seattle's Sub Pop label in the late 1980s, grunge exploded nationally when Nirvana's Nevermind topped the charts in early 1992, dragging Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains into stadiums. The format defined early-90s rock until Kurt Cobain's 1994 death and shifting tastes hastened its decline.
