Granular Electronic is music built around tiny fragments of sound: grains that are stretched, scattered, frozen, smeared, or reorganized into clouds and textures. It can be ambient, glitchy, cinematic, or rhythmically fractured. The signature is scale: microscopic audio particles become large emotional surfaces.
History
Granular synthesis theory traces to Iannis Xenakis and later computer-music research, then became more accessible through software, samplers, Max/MSP, and modular tools. Curtis Roads, Barry Truax, Fennesz, Oval, Tim Hecker, Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, Jan Jelinek, Taylor Deupree, Richard Devine, Autechre, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith all connect to granular or grain-like sound worlds. The technique is now central to film sound design, ambient, experimental pop, and modular performance.
