Gqom is Durban's hard, minimal, syncopated club sound: broken kicks, sparse synth alarms, chant fragments, tense repetition, and a raw low-end physicality that feels different from house or amapiano. The name is often linked to a Zulu word suggesting a hit or drum impact, and the music sounds like that: stripped-down, percussive, and built for dance crews, taxis, township parties, and loud sound systems. Its darkness and space made it one of South Africa's most distinctive electronic exports.
History
Gqom circulated through Durban producers, file sharing, taxis, and local parties before international labels and writers caught on in the mid-2010s. Rudeboyz, DJ Lag, Dominowe, Cruel Boyz, Babes Wodumo, Distruction Boyz, and DJ Tira helped move the sound from local circulation to global bass conversations. "Wololo," "Ice Drop," "Mercedes Song," and "Omunye" became landmarks, while DJ Lag's later work connected gqom to Beyoncé, Tyla, and broader international electronic music.
