Gothic Punk is punk darkened into theatrical atmosphere: minor-key riffs, horror romance, dramatic vocals, death imagery, post-punk basslines and a taste for shadows before goth becomes a separate ecosystem. It can be raw and fast, as with horror punk, or spacious and art-damaged, as with early goth and deathrock. The style matters because it shows punk becoming a mood world, not just a protest or speed language.
History
The Damned, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, TSOL, Christian Death, Misfits, Samhain and Rudimentary Peni each pulled punk toward darkness in different ways. UK batcave culture, Los Angeles deathrock, horror-film fandom and post-punk experimentation turned that darkness into scenes. Later gothic rock, horror punk, darkwave and deathrock revival all drew from this moment when punk's aggression became theatrical, macabre and emotionally stylized.
