Gospel Soul Country is sacred material carried by soul-freighted country vocals, richer groove, and stronger Black gospel DNA than the average country gospel record. Organ, piano, call-and-response feeling, and emotionally expansive singing are central.

History

The style grew where country-soul musicians and church-rooted singers worked in the same southern circuits and studios. In the modern era, The War and Treaty and similar artists have made it newly legible as a distinct lane, though its roots run much deeper than the recent label.
