Gospel-Rap Soul blends sung R&B or gospel hooks with rap verses, testimony, choir textures and spiritual uplift. It is different from straight Christian rap because the soul voice is central: a chorus that could live in gospel or R&B carries the track while rap gives narrative, confession or exhortation. The style can sound churchy, street-level, polished or mixtape raw, but its emotional engine is redemption in rhythm.
History
Gospel hip-hop and holy hip-hop scenes developed in the 1990s, while Kirk Franklin brought rap, choir and R&B energy into mainstream gospel. Later Lecrae, Mary Mary, Kanye West, Chance the Rapper, Mali Music, Tobe Nwigwe, PJ Morton and Sunday Service-adjacent music made gospel-rap soul more visible. The form works because rap can testify in detail while the sung hook gives the testimony a communal shape.
