History

Contemporary gospel softened into crossover balladry through BeBe & CeCe Winans in the late 1980s, then surged when Yolanda Adams' Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-produced 'Open My Heart' (2000) reached secular R&B radio. Kirk Franklin, Smokie Norful, and Fred Hammond bridged choir tradition and mainstream R&B production, defining the slow-worship lane through the 2000s.
