Glitch Hop combines hip-hop rhythm with digital errors, chopped samples, stutter edits, bitcrush, wonky bass, swung drums and electronic sound design. It can be head-nod experimental, dance-floor heavy or instrumental and abstract. The glitch is not accidental decoration; it becomes groove. Compared with ordinary instrumental hip-hop, glitch hop foregrounds the machine's hiccups, making broken audio feel funky and deliberate.
History
IDM, turntablism, instrumental hip-hop, laptop music and West Coast bass scenes all fed glitch hop. Artists such as Prefuse 73, Dabrye, edIT, The Glitch Mob, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Nosaj Thing and Opiuo shaped different versions, from microscopic sample surgery to festival bass. The style grew as software made slicing audio easy and producers started treating edits, artifacts and compression as rhythmic identity.
