Early-70s British glitter rock: stomping four-on-the-floor beats, fat fuzzy guitars, handclaps, gang-chant choruses and androgynous platform-booted theatricality. Campy, sequined and deliberately artificial — bubblegum hooks meet 50s rock-and-roll swagger, all glitter, makeup and outrageous costume, built for chart singles and Top of the Pops spectacle.
History
Marc Bolan's T. Rex sparked the craze with 1971's glittery 'Hot Love,' and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona gave it art-rock depth. Slade, Sweet and Roxy Music dominated the UK singles charts through the early 70s before punk and shifting fashions ended its run by mid-decade.
