History
Weber’s Der Freischütz set the early model by binding German folk-inflected subject matter to a distinct orchestral color world, and Wagner later transformed the tradition by redefining scale, continuity, and leitmotivic drama. Between those poles, German Romantic opera linked nationalism, myth, and orchestral modernity more tightly than any other 19th-century operatic line.
