Alt-rock that wears fandom and specialized obsession on its sleeve: lyrics steeped in sci-fi, gaming, comics, and pop-culture trivia, sung by self-styled outsiders. Crunchy power-pop guitars, big harmonies, and bittersweet hooks dominate. Earnest and emotional rather than purely jokey, it celebrates the geek identity directly.
History
Crystallized by Weezer's 1994 "Blue Album," geek rock fused power-pop crunch with proudly uncool, fandom-obsessed lyrics. Nerf Herder, who helped popularize the term, and bands like MC Frontalot's nerdcore orbit expanded it; Jonathan Coulton's mid-2000s internet hits and the broader convention scene sustained geek rock through the streaming era.
