Where garage grit meets bubblegum hooks: chiming Rickenbacker jangle, big harmonies and Beatles/Byrds melodicism shoved through fuzzy, fast garage energy. Songs are short, urgent and crammed with handclaps and choruses, leaning on bright chords and ringing guitars rather than menace, but still played raw and loud.
History
Emerged in the late 70s as bands wedded 60s garage and British Invasion melody to punk-era speed. The Flamin' Groovies, The Romantics and The Plimsouls cut jangling, hook-stuffed singles, with The Knack's 1979 breakthrough briefly mainstreaming the sound before it returned to the garage and power-pop underground.
