Garage House is the soulful, swung and vocal-rich house lineage associated with New York, New Jersey and the Paradise Garage afterlife. It favors gospel-influenced singing, organ chords, syncopated drums, warm bass, dubby vocal drops and rhythm sections that breathe more than rigid machine house. Garage house can be deep and spiritual or bright and club-ready. Compared with Chicago house, it often feels smoother, more vocal and more connected to R&B, gospel and disco musicianship.
History
The style takes its name from the Paradise Garage, where Larry Levan's approach to disco, dub, soul and club drama shaped a generation of producers and dancers. New York and New Jersey labels and producers carried that sensibility into house records, while Todd Terry, Masters at Work, Kerri Chandler, MK, Mood II Swing, Barbara Tucker and Blaze gave garage house different rhythmic and vocal identities. UK producers later transformed garage house swing into UK garage and 2-step. The garage-house lineage remains central to soulful house and vocal house.
