Garage country is country music run through trashier amps, reverb, fuzz, and DIY energy, with twang still visible beneath a layer of glorious grime. It is usually fast, scrappy, and happily indifferent to polish.

History

The lane formed where garage rock musicians pulled toward country and rockabilly structures, or where roots bands embraced garage sonics. The Blasters, Southern Culture on the Skids, early Cramps-related aesthetics, Reverend Horton Heat, and later roots-punk outfits all demonstrate how naturally cheap-guitar electricity and country form can collide.
