History
Anchored by Straight Outta Compton (1988) and The Chronic (1992), the era turned gangsta rap into the genre's economic engine while drawing an FBI letter, retail bans, and political backlash. Death Row's G-funk and Bad Boy's New York sound defined the East-West rivalry. The 1996-97 murders of Tupac and Biggie are widely read as its symbolic close, after which jiggy and Southern styles ascended.
