The foundational street-reportage style: aggressive first-person verses about gang life, police conflict, drugs and survival, delivered with cold bravado over hard, often funk-derived beats. Booming drums, menacing basslines and sampled sirens or G-funk synths frame profane, vivid storytelling that treats violence as documentary fact rather than spectacle.
History
Ice-T's '6 in the Mornin'' (1986) and Schoolly D's earlier records seeded the form; N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton (1988) detonated it nationally, drawing FBI attention and moral panic. It became hip-hop's dominant commercial force into the mid-90s through Death Row and beyond, fusing reportage, funk and Black-radical critique.
