Game Theme Pop

tagStarted 2007Peak 2013-2023Last big hit still active

Vocal pop songs written for video games: credits themes, character songs, and main themes that pair melodic hooks with the game's emotional or narrative core. Spans witty synth-pop, soaring orchestral ballads, and synth-and-piano indie pop, often sung in-character by an in-game vocalist, built to land the closing-credits gut-punch or define a game's identity.

History

Portal's 'Still Alive' (2007) proved a credits pop song could become a cultural touchstone, sung by GLaDOS voice Ellen McLain. Indie scores by Darren Korb and Lena Raine, plus orchestral game themes and idol-style character songs, expanded the form. Streaming, concerts, and YouTube turned game vocal themes into standalone pop with devoted fanbases.
