Gabber is Rotterdam-centered hardcore techno built from brutal distorted kicks, fast tempos, shouted samples, rave synths, and a defiant working-class youth culture. It is harder and faster than most early rave, but more communal than its outsider reputation suggests. The style is inseparable from shaved heads, tracksuits, hakken dance, Thunderdome iconography, and Dutch hardcore identity.

History

Gabber formed in the Netherlands around Rotterdam clubs, labels, and events including Parkzicht, Rotterdam Records, Mokum, Nightmare, and Thunderdome. DJ Paul Elstak, Euromasters, Rotterdam Termination Source, Neophyte, The Prophet, Rotterdam Terror Corps, Marc Acardipane, 3 Steps Ahead, The Stunned Guys, Ruffneck, and DJ Rob made the first canon. The scene faced media panic and overexposure in the 1990s, but Thunderdome's revival and global hardcore culture kept gabber central.
