The rock-forward face of fusion, where the electric band's backbeat and guitar muscle stay front and center while jazz harmony and improvisation supply the color. Tighter song forms than pure fusion, big amplified tones, busy bass runs and synth leads. Less about modal abstraction, more about groove, hooks and instrumental showmanship.
History
As fusion matured mid-70s, players like Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke and Jeff Beck pushed a punchier, more rock-anchored sound aimed at album-rock audiences. Beck's Blow by Blow (1975) and Wired (1976) sold huge; Return to Forever's later, louder lineup and Cobham's Spectrum proved fusion could rock arenas without abandoning chops.
