Funky House is house that foregrounds disco bass lines, bright filters, clipped rhythm guitar, brass hits, soulful hooks and a buoyant sense of swing. It is usually more cheerful and song-like than deep house, less raw than jackin' house, and more groove-centered than big-room EDM. Many tracks are built from disco or funk samples, filtered loops and simple vocal phrases that open up gradually. At its best, funky house feels like disco rebuilt for late-1990s and 2000s club sound systems.
History
Funky house grew from several overlapping scenes: French filter house, UK commercial club culture, US garage, disco-house edits and sample-heavy producers turning old records into new dance tools. Daft Punk, Stardust, Cassius, Armand Van Helden, Basement Jaxx, Spiller, Modjo and Bob Sinclar helped make the sound globally visible. The style thrived because it could satisfy pop listeners, disco fans and DJs who wanted hooks without abandoning house structure. Later nu-disco and disco-house revivals kept the vocabulary alive through re-edits, festival sets and streaming playlists.
