Funky Electric Blues keeps electric blues guitar up front but gives the band a tighter, funkier rhythm-section attack. It can still use shuffles and twelve-bar forms, but the drums hit harder, bass lines repeat more insistently, and rhythm guitar may chop instead of strum. History
Electric blues players adapted funk as audiences began expecting heavier backbeats and bigger stage grooves. Freddie King, Albert Collins, Albert King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Robert Cray, Bernard Allison and Eric Gales all show different versions of the idea. The form became a staple of festival blues because it lets guitar heroes stretch out without losing dancers.
