Rock guitars welded to a hard funk pocket: scratchy wah and sixteenth-note rhythm chops over slapped, popping or fat fingered bass that anchors 'the One.' Drums sit deep and unhurried, clavinet and horn punches accent the gaps, vocals shout or soar. Riff-driven but built for the hips, not the headbang.
History
Emerged as Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic and Jimi Hendrix's rhythm work pushed rock toward James Brown's groove discipline in the late '60s. Through the '70s it hardened into a guitar-led idiom, then surged in the '80s and early '90s via Prince and a Los Angeles scene led by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone.
