Rap built directly on funk's DNA: live or heavily sampled Parliament-Funkadelic and Zapp grooves, slap bass, wah guitar, talkbox vocoder hooks and horn stabs under playful, party-minded rhymes. Looser and more musical than sample-collage boom-bap — bouncy, danceable, P-Funk-saturated grooves foregrounding the band over the breakbeat.

History

Bridged late-'80s electro and the G-Funk wave: Digital Underground revived George Clinton's cosmic funk theater on 1990's Sex Packets, while Zapp's Roger Troutman lent talkbox DNA across the West Coast. The style fed directly into G-Funk and stayed a recurring mode for artists chasing live, horn-and-bass funk warmth over canned drums.
