French Touch Pop

tagStarted 1995Peak 1998-2002Last big hit still active

Pop-facing French house built from looped, filter-swept samples of late-70s disco and funk: phaser sweeps, a thumping four-on-the-floor kick, and warm vocal hooks layered over recycled grooves. The filter opening up just before the drop is its signature, turning crate-dug disco into sun-drenched, glossy crossover pop.

History

Devised by Paris producers in the mid-90s, the "French Touch" broke globally with Daft Punk's Homework (1997) and Cassius, then peaked with Stardust's 1998 anthem "Music Sounds Better with You," Cassius's 1999 single, and Modjo's 2000 hit "Lady." Bob Sinclar, Alan Braxe and Fred Falke extended its filtered-disco reach; the template still drives nu-disco pop.
