History
From Lully and Rameau through Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Poulenc, and beyond, French opera repeatedly reinvented itself while keeping a strong concern for diction, stagecraft, and orchestral color. Parisian institutions set many of the terms, but the tradition proved broader and more durable than any single subtype.
