Freestyle rap is improvisational or quasi-improvisational rap built for spontaneity, quick wit, and performance heat. Its best practitioners make invention sound effortless, which is one of rap's cruelest spectator sports.

History

Freestyling has been central to hip-hop since park-jam and cipher culture, later extending into radio shows, battle spaces, and internet content. Supernatural, Juice, Eyedea, Eminem, Black Thought, and Harry Mack mark different eras in which flowing off the dome remained a key marker of rap legitimacy.
