Freestyle is emotional, synth-driven dance-pop rooted in electro, Latin club culture, breakdance rhythm, and 1980s urban radio. It uses syncopated drum machines, bright keyboard hooks, dramatic love lyrics, soaring vocals, and club-ready 12-inch mixes. The sound is electronic and percussive, but its center is pop melodrama: heartbreak, desire, dancing, and reconciliation.
History
Freestyle grew in New York, Miami, and other urban club/radio markets after Shannon's "Let the Music Play" connected electro production to a vocal pop format. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Exposé, Stevie B, Debbie Deb, Trinere, The Cover Girls, TKA, Noel, Cynthia, Johnny O, Pretty Poison, Company B, and Nu Shooz made the style a major late-1980s sound. It crossed Latin, Black, and pop audiences while feeding later dance-pop, house-pop, and nostalgia package tours.
