Freakbeat

Freakbeat is the hard, mod-era British bridge between beat music, R&B, psychedelia and garage punk. It uses fuzz guitar, crashing drums, aggressive vocals, sharp harmonies and studio effects, but it keeps the concise single format and club-band punch of mid-1960s rock. The result is more frantic than Merseybeat and less expansive than psychedelia, with a wiry voltage that later punk and garage revivalists loved.
History
The term was applied retrospectively by collectors, but the sound came from British groups pushing beat and R&B toward distortion and aggression. The Pretty Things, The Creation, The Sorrows, The Eyes, The Birds, The Action and early The Who showed how mod energy could turn savage without abandoning hooks. Freakbeat's afterlife came through compilations and garage collectors, who heard in it a UK counterpart to American garage rock and a direct ancestor of punk's fast, cheap attack.
