Folk-rap combines rap delivery with acoustic instrumentation, singer-songwriter storytelling, or roots-oriented song structures. It tends to privilege narrative and voice over percussion spectacle.

History

The style never consolidated into one huge mainstream wave, but artists such as Buck 65, Sage Francis, The Streets, Why?, and K'naan created durable examples of rap crossing with folkish or acoustic frameworks. Its importance is disproportionate to its chart footprint because it proved rap could inhabit openly singer-songwriter territory without losing verbal identity.
