History
Born when the early-1960s folk revival went electric: Dylan plugged in at Newport 1965, the Byrds chimed his songs onto radio, and topical songwriting gained rock muscle. Phil Ochs and Buffy Sainte-Marie kept it overtly political; the form became the template every later protest branch drew from.
