The acoustic-rooted origin of the chime: 12-string Rickenbacker arpeggios threaded through folk melodies, close vocal harmonies, and poetic, often topical lyrics. Bright ringing guitars meet acoustic strum and tambourine; tempos are unhurried and luminous. Folk's earnest melody meets electric shimmer, equal parts coffeehouse and radio.
History
Invented in 1965 when the Byrds plugged Dylan and Pete Seeger into a 12-string Rickenbacker, folk jangle launched American folk-rock and the jingle-jangle template itself. Roger McGuinn's chime, echoed by the Searchers and later Aztec Camera and 10,000 Maniacs, became the founding DNA the whole jangle family inherited.
