Filter House is sample-based house built around sweeping EQ filters, looping disco or funk fragments, compressed drums, and dramatic opening or closing of the frequency range. The pleasure is partly mechanical: a tiny phrase becomes huge as the filter opens and the kick locks in. It is closely tied to French Touch, but the technique spread across global house, pop remixes, and disco-house edits. The style can feel ecstatic precisely because it turns repetition into suspense.

History

The sound matured in the 1990s as affordable samplers and house production made it easy to loop older records and sculpt them with filters. Daft Punk's early singles, Étienne de Crécy's Super Discount world, Cassius, Stardust, Alan Braxe, Fred Falke, DJ Falcon, and Thomas Bangalter turned filter movement into an emotional signature. Later producers copied the surface, but the best filter house records keep a balance between obvious loop pleasure and carefully timed release.
